Chapter 4

Pre-Reading Questions:
What is a mirage?

Note: If you live in an area with an abundance of greenery and water, your students may not have ever experienced a mirage.  The following explanation may be helpful:  A mirage is when the air is hot enough near the ground to create a boundary layer that reflects the sky.  This reflection of the sky off the ground looks exactly like the reflection of the sky off of water, which gives the illusion that what you are looking at is water in the distance, when in fact it is dry, hot ground.  As you walk toward it, it will continually recede in front of you and eventually disappear.  Wanderers in the desert who are not familiar with mirages can waste valuable strength chasing after distant lakes that do not exist.  (There is also a good explanation with a diagram and videos of real mirages here. )

Where can you actually find water in the desert?  (possible answers include underground, in a cactus, in a rocky crevice)  Can you tell from outward appearance how much water may be in these locations?

When you think of the outward appearance of a Nice Guy, what comes to mind?  How would you spot a Nice Guy?

Post-Read Questions:
Is there a stereotype for what a nice guy looks like?
